Here’s what to do in Plett in Winter – you’ll fall in love with Plett all over again!

Wine Tastings

When thinking about the word ‘cosy’, a glass or two of delicious red wine by a roaring fire quickly comes to mind. Fortunately, several amazing wine estates are just around the corner to explore. Here are some recommendations:

… and more!

2. Shopping

Rainy days make for great shopping days! There are some great local markets and shops to visit in and around Plett.

Old Nick Village is a great option. It’s open daily from 9 am to 5 pm- with a special mid-week market held every Wednesday! Besides exploring the galleries and shops, you can also watch textile weaving at the Mungo mill, admire the gardens or take a tree tour!

Global Village is another fantastic venue to visit. It has a coffee shop, a variety of interesting locally owned stores, and art galleries! Kids will also love the playground and bird-watching facilities.

Main Street in Plett is filled with things to see and do. You could spend hours walking around the many cafes, restaurants, and local shops. The Village Bookshop is any book lover’s dream, but they also stock many novelty gifts perfect for birthdays and special events. The Surf Shop in Plett stocks the latest Billabong and similar brands- you can also check the factory store, Crush, for Winter sales and discounts. Salt Clothing is another favourite local brand to check out!

3. Take a Scenic Drive

Cold or overcast weather is the perfect opportunity to explore and admire the incredible beauty of the garden route. Take a self-drive from Plettenberg Bay, passed the Keurbooms River and the Tsitsikamma National Park, and arrive at Storms River. On this route, you’ll see more of the dense rainforests, mountains and gorges, and beautiful ocean views.

4. Safari Adventure

Many people don’t know that the Winter months in South Africa are actually the best time to view wildlife. One reason is because the vegetation isn’t as dense, making animals easier to spot!

Book an exciting game drive at the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve with the family- guaranteed memories to last a lifetime! How many of the Big Five can you spot?

5. Spa Day

Maybe it’s time you spoiled yourself (and your partner) with some much-needed pampering. Make your romantic winter getaway one to remember with a pamper day at one of Plett’s amazing spas and resorts. Here are some great options to check out.

5. Visit a Park

Whether you have kids to entertain or not, there are a variety of parks to spend a fun day out with the family!

Here are just a few places to visit during your stay:

6. Go on a Hike

Why not get out and warm yourselves up on cooler days by going on a hike? There are hiking trails in Plett for all levels of fitness.

A favourite amongst locals and visitors is the Robberg Nature Reserve trails.

TIP: Pack a picnic or bring some drinks to enjoy the view at the top of the Robberberg mountain!

7. Horse Riding

Many come to Plett looking to escape the confines of city life- if you’re one of them, why not spend a day out with a stunning horse ride? Kurland Park, located just outside Plett, offers an unforgettable riding experience!

3. Shopping & Markets over Easter Weekend

From commercial retailers to boutique stores, to lively markets- there is definitely something for everyone when it comes to shopping in Plett.

Check out the Plettenberg Bay Mall and the Market Square for familiar and convenient shopping experiences.

For those looking to browse the local stores and boutiques, we recommend a stroll down main street where you’ll find a number of hidden gems like Crush, SALT clothing, LOLA, French Kisses, the Village Bookshop, and more!

Main street is also home to the bubbly Market on Main, where you can also find an amazing range of vendors and interesting goodies- as well as delicious food! The Market Bar above is a great place to relax, grab a drink and enjoy the stunning ocean views.

Another fantastic market to visit in Plett is the Old Nick Village. Originally built back in 1880, this market is full of history, eclectic shops, and fun for the whole family. Besides just shopping, you can also relax in the beautiful gardens, go on a guided ‘Tree Walk’ to learn more about the local indigenous trees in the area, or take a tour of the Mungo Mill.

4. Visit an Animal Sanctuary

Plettenberg Bay is home to not only one, but three, wildlife sanctuaries! These are all great options for a day out with your loved ones (and a firm favourite with the kids!)

Monkeyland is the world’s first free roaming multi-specie primate sanctuary. On one of their ‘monkey safaris’, you’ll see over 550 species of primates. You can also take a walk through the beautiful forest canopy on the sanctuary’s 120 meter suspension bridge!

At Birds of Eden you can take a self-guided walk through the indigenous forest gorge to view more than 220 species of birds in their amazing free-flight habitat.

The Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary offers a guided 80 minute safari walk where you’ll have the amazing opportunity to admire the majestic cats that call the large, natural habitats in the sanctuary their forever home. In addition, you can also spot some ‘bonus’ wildlife living in the sanctuary, such as raccoons, zebras and a honey badger!

5. Wine and Gin Tasting

Plett may be the smallest wine region of South Africa, but there’s nothing small about the taste and experiences of these local wine estates. For those who enjoy tasting their way through the weekend, here are some of the best wine estates to visit in the area:

  • Bramon Wine Estate – If you’re a gin lover too, we recommend stopping by the Six Dogs gin tasting room also located on the estate!

6. Keurbooms River Nature Reserve

The Keurbooms River Nature Reserve is a popular easter weekend destination and a great way to spend time outdoors and in nature- a perfect choice for those looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities. Its lush forests are filled with indigenous trees, including giant stinkwoods, the Cape beech, and beautiful Outeniqua yellowwoods.

There is so much to do- from boating, kayaking, angling, swimming, picnicking, and more.

The Keurbooms River Ferries also offer visitors excursions up the river- a great experience for the whole family!
